Jewelry repair
Diamond and gemstone setting.
Prongs and bezels wear thin with daily use, and a stone that moves is a stone at risk. We tighten loose stones, rebuild worn prongs, and reset or replace stones that have come out.
When you might need it.
- A stone moves, rattles, or catches the light differently than it used to
- Prong tips look flat or thin, or snag on clothing
- A stone has already fallen out
- You want a stone moved into a new setting
What’s involved.
Tightening
Prongs or bezels are carefully pushed back against the stone so it sits securely.
Retipping and rebuilding
Worn prong tips get new metal added. Prongs that are badly worn or broken can be rebuilt.
Setting and resetting
A loose or replacement stone is set into its seat and checked under magnification.
Care at the bench.
What we watch for when we do diamond and gemstone setting.
The whole setting checked
When one prong is worn, others often are too. The whole setting is checked under magnification, not only the prong you noticed.
Stones that dislike heat
Emeralds, opals, pearls, and some treated stones can be damaged by heat or cleaning. We plan around them, and remove them first if needed.
Matching the original style
New prong tips and settings are shaped to match the rest of the piece.
Preliminary pricing.
Your preliminary price range is free and comes from your photos. The final price is confirmed after we inspect the piece in hand, and no work starts until you approve it.
What affects the price
- How many stones or prongs need work
- Whether prongs need tightening, retipping, or full rebuilding
- The type of setting: prong, bezel, channel, or pavé
- The stone's size and hardness, and whether a stone needs to be supplied
- The metal of the setting
If you’re mailing it in
If a stone is loose, don't wear the piece before shipping. Pack it so the stone can't fall out, and tell us if any stones are already missing.
Start with photos. Don’t ship anything until we’ve agreed on shipping and insurance with you.

Can you replace a lost diamond or gemstone?
Yes, we can set a replacement stone. Tell us the size and type if you know them, and we'll talk through options when we send your estimate.
How do I know if my prongs are worn?
Look at the tips under good light. Rounded, full tips are healthy. Flat, thin, or shiny tips that barely cover the stone's edge usually need attention. A close-up photo is usually enough for a preliminary opinion.
Should I keep wearing a ring with a loose stone?
Better not. A loose stone can fall out at any time. Put the piece away safely and send photos so we can tell you what it needs.
