Ring sizing, up or down.

A ring that spins, pinches, or won't pass the knuckle can usually be resized. We look at the band, the setting, and any stones first, and tell you before we start if a ring can't be sized safely.

When you might need it.

  • The ring slides around or turns stones-down on your finger
  • It leaves a mark, feels tight in warm weather, or is hard to take off
  • You've inherited or been given a ring in someone else's size
  • A previous sizing left a visible seam or a thin spot

What’s involved.

  1. Sizing down

A small section of the band is removed, the ends are joined, and the shank is reshaped and finished.

  2. Sizing up

The band is stretched slightly for small changes, or metal is added for larger ones, then joined and finished.

  3. Checking the stones

Settings are checked after sizing, because reshaping a band can loosen stones near the shank.

Care at the bench.

What we watch for when we do ring sizing.

  • Stones kept away from heat

Stones near the shank are protected, removed and reset, or the join is laser welded, so heat doesn't reach them.

  • Metal that matches

Metal added to size a ring up should match its karat and color. If an exact match isn't possible, we tell you before starting.

  • Stamps and engraving

Karat stamps and engraving inside the band are kept clear of the join wherever the ring's design allows.

  • A join that disappears

The shank is reshaped round and the join is finished to blend into the band.

Preliminary pricing.

Your preliminary price range is free and comes from your photos. The final price is confirmed after we inspect the piece in hand, and no work starts until you approve it.

What affects the price

  • How many sizes up or down
  • The metal (yellow, white, or rose gold, platinum, or silver)
  • The width and thickness of the band
  • Stones set along the band, which may need extra work
  • Re-plating white gold with rhodium afterward

If you’re mailing it in

If you know your size, include it in your request. If you don't, a local jeweler can measure your finger for free, and we'll confirm the target size with you before starting.

Common questions.

Can every ring be resized?

Most can, but not all. Eternity bands with stones all the way around, some tension settings, and certain alternative metals often can't be sized in the usual way. We'll tell you after reviewing your photos, and confirm on inspection.

Will sizing damage the stones?

Sizing is planned around the stones. Heat-sensitive stones may need to be removed and reset, or the join made with a laser welder to keep heat away from them. We explain the approach before any work begins.

Can a ring be sized more than once?

Usually, but repeated sizing in the same spot can weaken a band. Tell us about earlier sizings and we'll look at the band before recommending an approach.
