Jewelry repair
Gold plating.
Gold plating puts a thin layer of gold over a piece, to refresh a worn gold finish, match a piece to others, or change its color. Like all plating, it wears with time, and how long it lasts depends on how the piece is worn.
When you might need it.
- A plated piece shows a different metal underneath
- You want a piece to match the color of other jewelry
- You'd like a rose or yellow gold look on a piece
What’s involved.
Preparation
The piece is cleaned and polished, because plating only bonds well to clean metal.
Plating
The piece is plated in the color you choose. Stones that can't go through plating are protected or removed first.
Finishing
The finish is checked for even color.

How long does gold plating last?
It depends on the thickness and how often the piece is worn and rubbed. Rings wear fastest. We won't promise a set time.
Is gold plating the same as solid gold?
No. Plating is a thin surface layer. We always describe plated work as plated.
